The Great Organ was built by E.F. Walcker and Company of Ludwigsburg, Germany for the Boston Music Hall and dedicated in 1863. In 1884, it was removed and placed in storage to make room on the stage for the new Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 1897, Methuen millionaire Edward F. Searles, who had an interest in pipe organs from an early age, purchased the Great Organ at auction and had noted architect Henry Vaughan custom design a building to house it. This architecturally and acoustically stunning concert hall was dedicated in 1909. In 1946, the building was incorporated as a nonprofit cultural center and renamed the Methuen Memorial Music Hall.
Today, The Methuen Memorial Music Hall is a registered historical landmark and is actively used for performances of many kinds. The Great Organ is the center piece of the Hall and the 15-week Summer Organ Concert series represents the flagship events of our season. We also feature a diverse set of events throughout our season, including piano, vocal, and instrumental performances. The Hall is available for private rentals, including weddings, gatherings, and performances.
